• In de NRC-wetenschapsbijlage van 15 juni een uitgebreid gesprek met Jan ten Thije over luistertaal. Hij pleit ervoor om veel vaker gebruik te maken van luistertaal: het wordt onderschat hoe goed mensen een vreemde taal kunnen volgen die zij zelf niet spreken. “Luistertaal is leuk, maar het is ook het meest democratisch, en het is het handigst. We hadden er alleen tot voor kort geen naam voor.” In Europees verband kan luistertaal aanzienlijke (vertaal)kosten besparen. Bovendien kunnen de sprekers zich beter uitdrukken wanneer ze gewoon in hun moedertaal kunnen praten in plaats van hun toevlucht te moeten nemen tot een lingua franca als Engels. Drogredenen en topsalarissen

• V. Waarom verdienen topmanagers exorbitante bedragen? A. Omdat ze met autoriteit veel geld vragen. Degenen aan wie ze dat geld vragen denken: "Wie zoveel geld vraagt moet wel heel goed zijn. En daarom geven we het ook, want anders gaat hij nog ergens anders heen." A: Iemand vraagt met autoriteit veel geld. B: Iemand die veel geld verdient moet wel goed in zijn vak zijn. C. Iemand die met autoriteit veel geld vraagt zal dit wel (ergens) kunnen krijgen. D. Dus is zo iemand goed in zijn vak. E. Dus krijgt hij het van ons. De frase "met autoriteit" heb ik toegevoegd omdat niet iedereen zulke hoge beloningen vermag te vragen. De vraag waar de manager zijn ethos vandaan haalt (mogelijk verdient hij het echt), of dat het wellicht met zijn narcisme te maken heeft, is een vraag die ik hier niet wil aanroeren. Omdat het me om de effectiviteit van een drogreden gaat. De vraag of hij veel geld krijgt omdat hij goed is danwel of hij goed is omdat hij veel geld krijgt is onbeantwoordbaar geworden. Let op de verschillende betekenissen van "omdat": in de eerste frase is er een tijdsvolgorde en een verdienstelijkheidsreden voor de hoge beloning, in de tweede frase drukt het "omdat" een post hoc ergo propter hoc drogreden uit. De verklaring voor dit verschijnsel is nog niet gegeven. Waarom gedragen wij ons als makke schapen op grond van deze falende redenering? Onder "wij" versta ik niet alleen degenen die de geldkraan openzetten, maar ook degenen die dat gelaten accepteren. Het antwoord op die vraag komt niet van de logos-zijde van de situatie, maar van de ethos en pathos-zijden. Wij zijn onzeker en hebben behoefte aan een leidsman. Argumentum ad Futuram

• The Argumentum ad Futuram is a fallacy for arguing from the assumed state of the future to say something to determine our choices in the present. The fallacy tries to do away with difficult ethical considerations. I came across an instance of the fallacy in a news item last week. The item concerned the possibility of changing something to the energy with which our genes set themselves to their respective tasks. This would slower their aging, and this would contribute to the lengthening of our lives with approximately twenty years, on average. A scientist was interviewed and he asked us to imagine people one hundred years ahead of us thinking back about us. They would think of us as backward or dumb because we simply succumbed to dying whenever our bodies would give up. ...The ad futuram reflects the way we tend to think anyway... The Argumentum ad Futuram says: if some defect shall be corrected in the future then deciding not to make this correction possible now is a stupidity, and pondering the relevant ethical ins and outs a redundancy. The argument assumes, without argument, that there will be this future where we will do these things. So, what it actually says is: scientific developments cannot be stopped no matter which ethical considerations we might have for wanting to prevent a certain development. Or: ethics will be trumped by reality, and therefore ethics is redundant. A warning: the Argumentum ad Futuram will often go unnoticed because it reflects the way we tend to think anyway. • Wat is er nu zo geweldig aan dit nieuwe camera-concept? De camera bestaat voornamelijk uit een lens waardoorheen je de wereld om je heen ziet. Je klikt als het je bevalt wat je ziet. Er zijn nog wat knoppen voor de belichting e.d. De foto wordt onmiddellijk (of later) via Bluetooth doorgeseind naar het apparaat dat hem vervolgens laat zien—je iPhone bij voorbeeld (of thuis, je computer). Het toestelletje dwingt je om te beslissen terwijl je de wereld om je heen waarneemt, in plaats van door naar een plaatje te kijken. De camera dwingt je te fotograferen wat je in de werkelijkheid om je heen ziet. Maar doet niet iedere camera dat? Nou nee: bij onze hedendaagse digitale camera's is het de gewoonte om op de achterkant van je toestel te staren naar het beeldje dat daar verschijnt en dan te klikken. Talking faster

• At the UiL-OTS  (Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS) a lot of research is carried out with the help of digital tools. An example is the work by Hugo Quené on tempo in the Troonredes (throne speeches). Older people speak slower than young people, as has been shown repeatedly in studies where older and younger talkers are compared at the same moment. But what causes this age-related difference? Is it really because older people spoke faster when they were younger, and because they have slowed down when they aged? Or is it because the older talkers were already slow talkers when they were young? In the latter case, the older talkers may have speeded up when they aged, but not enough to match the even faster speech tempo of younger talkers. This latter case would be expected if the society is speeding up in its entirety. Various bits of evidence support the second account. Everything is going faster nowadays than before: not only the mail (e-mail), cars, elevators and airplanes, but also speech events: the speech tempo of weather forecasts in Dutch TV news, and of news events in radio reports, has increased steadily since the 1950s. In order to investigate the second account, we need speech materials from the same speaker, recorded over dozens of years under similar circumstances. Those materials are difficult to find, because in many recordings the circumstances change over the years: talkers adapt a less formal style (as in Dutch TV news), equipment becomes lighter and more sensitive, etc. But the annual "troonredes" (speeches from the throne) constitute excellent material, because the circumstances remain constant, and the audience varies in its members but remains essentially the same. Digital Humanities Minor. An Interview With Prof. Dr. Stronks.

• As of next academic year, students will be able to participate in the Digital Humanities Minor Program at Utrecht University. With this, the Digital Humanities Group has achieved one of its major goals; realizing that Utrecht University is the first university of Europe that offers such a program. At the university, DH-courses were already taught, but the minor allows for an interdisciplinary teaching in digital tools, infrastructures and cultures available today, according to Prof. Dr. E. Stronks, coordinator of the DH-Minor. “It is part of the possibilities which are already used outside the academic world and it would be foolish not to make use of it,” she said about the techniques that will be taught during the minor. The program will consist of four courses, the first being an introductory one in which various aspects of DH will be demonstrated to the students. “It will not only focus on research and theory, but also on the technology behind it.” Furthermore, students will become acquainted with several different disciplines, which may lead them to think more broadly about their own field of study. The second course is called Digital Tools and Methods and it will focus more on DH-techniques. Students will be introduced to three of the most used techniques: programming, database technology and text-mining. The third one, DH in Practice, differs from the second course in the way that there will not be as many lectures. Also, the students will work with researchers of the Translantis project. Presentation ePistolarium: New Online Tool for Scholarly Correspondences from the Dutch Republic

• The scientific revolution of the 17th century was driven by countless discoveries in the workshop, in the observatory and in society at large. There was a dramatic increase in the amount of information, giving rise to new knowledge, theories and world images. But how did the 17th-century scientific information system actually work? How did this knowledge circulate? The basis of this information system lay in the correspondence between intellectuals. In order to answer this question the CKCC project built a web application called ePistolarium, which will be launched officially on Thursday June 13 in Utrecht. With this application researchers can browse and analyze around 20,000 letters written by and sent to 17th-century scholars who lived in the Dutch Republic. The CKCC project was initiated in a collaboration between the Descartes Centre for the History and Philosophy of the Sciences and the Humanities at the University of Utrecht and the Huygens ING. The correspondence network project is the first study in a more comprehensive program in which both institutes continue to collaborate with each other and with external partners. The National Library of the Netherlands, Utrecht University, University of Amsterdam, and the Huygens ING provided content. DANS (Data Archiving and Networked Services) developed a tool for archiving the corpus and research for re-use. The software for the ePistolarium has been developed by Huygens ING. The project was made possible by the financial support of NWO and CLARIN-NL. With the CKCC ePistolarium researchers have a tool designed to identify, interrogate, analyze and visualize patterns of scholarly communication in a large collection of data and metadata of letters. It allows them to ask questions and to test hypotheses they could not possibly deal with before, but that are of central importance for understanding the spread and nature of communication by Dutch scholars in the Republic of Letters. The digital humanities, whereto? An interview with Dr. Kiene Brillenburg Wurth.

• Dr. Kiene Brillenburg Wurth, Associate Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Utrecht and project leader of the VIDI-project Back to the Book (2011-2016) funded by the Dutch Research Council, has kindly agreed to talk about her understanding of the digital humanities, the challenges faced by researchers dealing with the digital humanities, and the book she has recently edited, Between Page and Screen (Fordham University Press, 2012). The Digital Humanities: Whereto? "For me, 'digital humanities' means that the humanities themselves are changing because of the digitization process: texts are changing, the materiality of texts is changing, and the way we relate to these things as researchers is also changing. In this way, the digital humanities are inextricably intertwined with post-humanism. For instance, we cannot talk about literature anymore without at least mentioning technology. Since 80% of the reading that is done today is machine reading, we must incorporate this into our research as humanists. And we need to deal with such problems not only as information scientists, but also as cultural students, because they are part of our culture. In other words, we need to engage with code in the humanities, and not only as a tool, but as a new starting point for theory, for philosophy, for conceptions about reading, for thinking about how we can know more, and learn more about reading. All the lists that that are being compiled on the Internet is what literary scholars used to do – they used to recommend books to readers, tell them who published a book, and who read it. American partner of the Emblem Project Utrecht receives 600.000 dollar

• The American partners of the Emblem Project Utrecht, Mara Wade and Tim Cole of the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) have received a NEH grant for the digitization and indexing of 100 emblem books containing approximately 8,000 emblems from the early modern period (1531-1750) along with the metadata enrichment of 244 additional emblem books, all of which would be combined in the online portal Emblematica Online. In order to enable reciprocal digital archiving and preservation, additional workflows for capturing content and metadata will be developed and community agreements will be extended to encompass sharing of full content. Partners include Glasgow University, Utrecht University, and the Getty Research Library. Cross-discipline use cases will be explored by all partners. The early modern emblem (1531-1750) was a bimedial genre, combining texts and images. Emblems were a primary vehicle of cultural expression in the Renaissance and were often used to convey complex ideas in a compact and compelling format. The genre was popular; one scholar estimates (see below) that 6,500 emblem books were published during the early modern period. Since each emblem book can contain tens or even hundreds of individual emblems, the total corpus of printed emblems runs to the hundreds of thousands. Today, the study of emblems informs multiple academic domains, spanning disciplines such as art history, cultural history, literature, semiotics, political science, musicology, and religious studies. The surviving exemplars of early modern printed emblem books are geographically widely spread, with half a dozen libraries in Europe and North America holding the primary research corpus. To build an authoritative virtual collection in support of humanities scholarship and pedagogy, this project proposes to: • Expand the nascent corpus of online emblematica through digitization of about 100 emblem books (~8,000 emblems); • Develop a cohesive, representative, well-curated virtual collection of digitized emblem books and the individual emblems they contain. ...more

Lisanne Walma wins the Theodore Roosevelt American History Award

• TRAHA laureate Lisanne Walma with RSC director prof Kees van Minnen On Friday March 12, 2013, the Theodore Roosevelt American History Award (Traha) has been awarded to Lisanne Walma, a graduate from the American Studies program at Utrecht. Walma won this prestigious prize for her master’s thesis, entitled “The Good, the Bad, and the Forgotten: U.S. Veterans and the Mall Memorial Movement.” The jury was particularly impressed by the originality of the thesis and the accuracy with which she has addressed the subject and placed it within the academic fields of commemoration studies, historical memory and popular culture. The prize consists of a trip to the United States, a stone bust of Theodore Roosevelt, and a certificate. The TRAHA is awarded annually since 1987 by the Roosevelt Study Center in Middelburg, and is made available by the Theodore Roosevelt Association in New York. Dutch universities with an American Studies Program can nominate the best master theses on an American historical topic for this prize. This year the jury consisted of prof. Joanne van der Woude (University of Groningen), dr. George Blaustein (University of Amsterdam) and Roger Voncken (prize winner Traha 2012). The name of the award refers to Theodore Roosevelt, who not only was the 26th president of the United States of America, but also a meritorious historian. The jury praised the high quality of all nominated theses, which ranged widely across times periods, geographical areas, and scholarly subjects. It felt that the submissions painted a positive picture of the quality of research and writing among Master’s students of American History and American Studies in the Netherland. Cynthia Han, The Power of Context: the Representation of the Chinese in Broken Blossoms and its Reception. D.W. Griffith’s association with the Chinese is exemplified by his melodrama film called Broken Blossoms, or The Yellow Man and the Girl (1919). In this presentation, I want to locate the film in its historical and cultural context. That is, I will examine how Broken Blossoms has been contextually produced, received, and appropriated. By looking at the Chinese exhibition and reception of Broken Blossoms, we become even more aware of the importance of context. While Griffith’s melodrama films may adhere to the conventions, themes, and practices that were developed in the United States, the Chinese interpretation of his works should be approached from its Chinese socio-cultural, historical context. Largely informed by nationalism and cosmopolitanism, race and gender, visual culture and literature, Griffith’s films have raised different considerations in China and the United States, allowing for alternative interpretations. Enjoying the real American Experience

• Residence of the Ambassador of the Netherlands, Washington, DC by Peter van de Kasteelen In the fall of 2011 I already applied for an internship at the Netherlands embassy in Washington, D.C. Unfortunately, I didn’t get it. Six months later I tried again. This time the added weight of my enhanced experience in the American Studies program at Utrecht was enough to get me in. I was overjoyed. For a student of American politics and foreign policy there is no better place than Washington, D.C. The sheer abundance of think tanks, government institutions and foreign representations  make this city one of the most interesting places in the world. My internship entailed the following basic tasks: follow the elections, go to think tanks, and help my colleagues whenever necessary. I’ve learned a lot so far. I’ve helped answer questions Dutch members of parliament have put to cabinet ministers (“kamervragen”), prepared speaking points for the ambassador, and done research on many subjects. I also regularly compiled summaries of the press releases of the White House, the State Department, and the Department of Defense. The elections however are a different story. Elections in the US are completely different from those that we are used to in the Netherlands. If you live in or near a swing state (which Virginia, where I lived, was), you get bombarded with ads and information. I also was imprudent enough to give out my phone number and email address to both campaigns (because I went to rallies of both candidates). This resulted in me getting around 10 emails and 3 phone calls each day from both campaigns. And fun as they might be in the first month or so, American presidential elections get old pretty fast…  Especially given the fact that this campaign was mostly light on policy and mainly negative. ...more

Cultuurhistorisch Seminar 22 oktober 2012: The Power of Autonomous Literature / W.F. Hermans

• Drie sprekers zullen hun lopend onderzoek presenteren: Frans Ruiter en Wilbert Smulders (Nederlands, Universiteit Utrecht): Presentatie van het project in zijn algemeenheid, met concrete toelichting aan de hand van een poeticaal essay van Hermans en Daan Rutten (Nederlands, Universiteit Utrecht): Over het verhaal ‘Glas’ van W.F. Hermans. Toelichting: The concept of autonomy is a frequently recuring concept in research on Western literature since 1800. Clearly, this concept is used te refer to what is considered an essential characteristic of modern literature, namely the ambivalent relationship between literature and society. However, it is also clear that this concept represents a range of different issues: sometimes it refers to the autonomy of a work, sometimes to that of the author, and at other times it refers to the autonomy of the literary domain in its social context. Moreover, autonomy is appraised in a variety of ways: autonomy is frequently seen as the liberation of literature, which can only flourish once it has attained particularity, but sometimes autonomy is taken to symbolize the declining function of literature. In the historiography of modern literature, the discussion about autonomy is fundamental. It is therefore necessary to provide an analysis and explanation of the concept. Invitation for a special event for (research) master students in the Humanities

• On 25 June, 1-4PM, a special event takes place around the research exhibition at the Basis voor Actuele Kunst (BAK), After History: Alexandre Kojève as a Photographer (May–15 July 2012), curated by philosopher and art historian Boris Groys. This exhibition unveils the unique photographic work of Russian-born French philosopher and diplomat Alexandre Kojève (1902–1968). The photographs he took on his global travels in the 1950s and 1960s, and the many postcards that he collected during his lifetime, capture the essence of both his philosophical thinking and political work. Kojève’s notion of the “end of history” manifests in these countless repetitive images of a world awaiting an ideal imaginary of freedom, justice, and equality to be realized through activism—not unlike our expectant world of today. As a preparation for a guided tour to this exhibition, scholars from the Faculty of the Humanities and collaborators of BAK will discuss key texts on philosophy, photography and the end of history (Hegel, Kojève, Fukuyama, Groys). There is only room for a limited number of participants. Is er toekomst voor de SER?

• Bij het 50-jarig bestaan van de SER is er -door een team van Utrechtse historici en economen- een mooi boek uitgebracht over dit overlegorgaan, dat de belichaming vormt van het Nederlandse poldermodel. Nu lijkt het aanstaande vertrek van voorzitter Rinnooy Kan de discussie over de toekomst van de SER op scherp te zetten. Kabinet en werkgevers doen net zo lief meteen zaken met elkaar. En de vakbonden? Die willen meepraten, maar krijgen ze gehoor? Belastingmoraal

• Volgens de Volkskrant (13 maart 2012) lopen de EU-landen samen jaarlijks honderden miljarden aan belastinggelden mis door zwart werken en fraude; over (legale) belastingontwijking hebben we het dan nog niet eens. De verschillen binnen Europa blijken groot: in sommige Zuid- en Oost-Europese landen (maar ook in België!) ligt het percentage gederfde belastinggelden rond de 10%, in noord-west Europa zo rond de 5%.   Uit het verleden (dat van onze eigen Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden bijvoorbeeld) weten we dat een effectieve belastingheffing zowel een teken van als een voorwaarde voor een gezonde samenleving is. Voor een historicus geven de cijfers van de Volkskrant daarom aanleiding tot interessante vragen. Dictatuur van de markt ?

• Griekenland moet volgens commentator Wolfgang Münchau (Financial Times, 20 februari 20112) failliet gaan om zijn democratie te bewaren. De druk van andere eurolanden is zo hoog opgelopen dat het opgeven van de euro voor de Griekse regering een steeds aantrekkelijker optie wordt. Dan maar liever de dictatuur van de markt, die in staat zou moeten zijn om risico's beter te prijzen dan politici en hun grillige kiezers. Oud en arm

• Van omvallende banken kijken we tegenwoordig niet meer op. Maar een 540-jarige bank die wankelt is toch wat anders (Financial Times, 20 februari 2012). De Monte dei Paschi di Siena vertilde zich aan het overnemen van stukken ABN AMRO en zit ook nog eens met te grote hoeveelheden Italiaanse staatsschuld. Bijna de helft van het bedrijf is in handen van een stichting die uit ontvangen dividenden jaarlijks 250 miljoen euro aan Sienese goede doelen uitkeerde, meer dan het hele gemeentelijke budget. Die aandeelhouder zit bovendien zelf weer diep in andere financiële problemen, ontstaan door nieuwe eisen aan de omvang van bankkapitaal. Het ging zo goed, al die jaren, en nu moet alles radicaal veranderen. • ‘Ander proza’- de titel van een bloemlezing van Sybren Polet uit 1978 – was een ongelukkige term: te generaliserend, te contrasterend, te zeer pochend op een uitzonderingspositie. Ik behandel het ‘ander proza’ tegen de achtergrond van de cultuurrevolutie in de jaren zestig en betoog dat het beste ‘ander proza’ later werd geschreven, toen vrijwel niemand die term nog gebruikte. • ‘Erotisch vitalisme als verzet in Turks fruit en Paul-tegenpaul’ In het geheel van contestatiebewegingen en maatschappelijke revoltes stond de vraag naar het engagement van de schrijver tijdens de jaren zestig en zeventig hoog op de literaire agenda. Hugo Brems merkt in zijn literatuurgeschiedenis Altijd weer vogels die nesten beginnen op dat de literatuur vooral op het vlak van de seksuele revolutie een ‘voortrekkersrol’ heeft gespeeld (Brems 2006, 259). De ongeremde, vitalistische en expliciete voorstelling van seksualiteit gold ‘als opstand, als revolte, , kortom als strijdmiddel’ tegen het heersende morele en politieke klimaat (Brems 2006, 267). In deze bijdrage wil ik mij richten op de relatie tussen het erotische vitalisme en het ideologische verzet. Meer bepaald stel ik mij de vraag hoe dat vitalisme vorm krijgt in de romans Turks fruit (1969) van Jan Wolkers en Paul-tegenpaul (1970) van Paul de Wispelaere, en welke normen en waarden daarbij gehanteerd worden. Ik wil die vragen beantwoorden vanuit een lichamelijk perspectief: het lichaam is immers niet louter de zetel van onze driften en meest vitale verlangens, maar is als ‘a canvas of social inscriptions’ (Hertel, Making sense, 2005, 15) ook een product en producent van sociale waarden. Het bevindt zich met andere woorden op het snijpunt van natuur en cultuur, van seksualiteit en politiek. Om het lichaam in de tekst te bestuderen, ga ik niet uit van een essentialistische opvatting van het lichaam, maar van de idee dat het lichaam zich slechts laat representeren in de betekenisrelaties die het aangaat. Hans Vandevoorde en Lars Bernaerts: 'Ongerijmde Ruimtes'

• Het is bekend dat Hugo Claus zich eind jaren veertig verdiepte in het surrealisme en er vervolgens zelf mee aan de slag ging. Georges Wildemeersch schreef hierover in 2009 nog: ‘ ken geen ander Nederlandstalig schrijver die zo sterk door het surrealisme werd gevormd’, en hij voegde er meteen aan toe: ‘Dit aspect van zijn werk werd nog niet onderzocht’. In onze lezing willen we het surrealisme van Claus’ vroege verhalen, in zowel de gepubliceerde (uit Natuurgetrouw) als de ongepubliceerde (opgenomen in Het teken van de ram), verkennen. Uitgaande van de hypothese dat in surrealistisch proza verschillende tekstuele werelden botsen, ontwikkelen we een methode om de ruimte van de surrealistische tekst te bestuderen. Die methode wil recht doen aan zowel het leesproces als de tekstuele eigenschappen van een surrealistisch verhaal en duidt tegelijk het verband met de context aan. In onze uiteenzetting lichten we toe hoe we cognitieve verteltheorie en contextualisering op elkaar afstemmen en we demonstreren dit aan de hand van een van Claus’ verhalen. Rosemarie Buikema: 'Lichaam en letteren'

• Vorm en materie hebben sinds oudsher een gegenderde relatie. Mannen domineren sinds Plato het domein van de vorm, vrouwen associeert men met materie. Deze diep ingesleten tegenstelling tussen vorm en materie, mannelijkheid en vrouwelijkheid, zien we terug in de wijze waarop de Nederlandse letterkunde heeft gereageerd op de aanwezigheid van vrouwelijke auteurs. Op de spreekwoordelijke uitzondering die de regel bevestigt na (Betje Wolff, Aagje Deken en de briefroman) is er geen vrouwelijke auteur of groep van vrouwelijke auteurs beschreven die structurele vormvernieuwing in de Nederlandse literatuur heeft bewerkstelligd.
